Based upon Spacecraft and Payload sensitivities and mission parameters, develops contamination requirements and formulates an overall contamination control program, defining a cost-effective and acceptable risk plan to meet the needs of the program. This may include the development new approaches as required to meet the needs of the project. The Contamination Engineer is responsible for ensuring that the plan and implementation are compatible with the hardware, cost and schedule.

Defines, Plans and supports the performance of contamination transport modeling to address the impacts of thermal vacuum testing, launch contamination redistribution and the redistribution of contamination on orbit, in order to assure that the program requirements for operational performance and lifetime are met.

May be required to evaluate in-flight data to verify the contaminant behavior predictions based upon laboratory testing or modeling.

Supports design and modification of hardware designs to mitigate contamination effects through all stages of the program.

In order to minimize the risk and costs to the programs the contamination Engineer will support Assembly, Integration and Testing activities to control the cleanliness of the hardware and facilities including reviewing processes, facility controls, facility status, work planning, implementation of cleaning processes and protection from contamination.

Evaluate activities and environmental conditions in the areas surrounding facilities to address risks to hardware and activities within the facilities.

Develops monitoring and measurement plans for determining the buildup of contamination on surfaces from assembly through Integration and testing, up through launch.

Develops launch site and prelaunch contamination plans and requirements and works during prelaunch activities to ensure program requirements are met.

Develops processes, procedures and test plans for flight qualification testing and vacuum outgassing measurements.

Provides input into materials and thermal control surface selection to assure that space environmental effects do not degrade the system performance due to interactions with the contaminants.

Assesses on-orbit performance and degradation of performance on orbit potentially due to contamination as applicable.

Supports Customers and hardware providers as necessary to assure that the total system meets its requirements in an efficient manner.
