Orbital ATK is currently seeking an experienced Principle Safety Engineer to support our Defense Electronic Systems team in our Northridge, CA office.

Role description & Responsibilities:

Principle Safety Engineer for development and production programs of defense articles.

Job Description:

As the System Safety Engineer, ensure that the system safety program meets all applicable range/system safety requirements.  This includes leading the System Safety effort and interfacing with internal and external customers and associates in engineering, program management and range safety.  The System Safety engineer will lead a multi-disciplinary team to tailor Range Safety documentation (RCC-319, RCC 324, AFSPCMAN 91-710) with Range and representatives.  The System Safety Engineer is responsible for scheduling and managing all System Safety related activities. This position will generate and maintain required Range/System Safety documents (such as RSSR, ESADP, FTSR, SAR, HARs) throughout the life of the program.  The System Safety engineer generates and presents status charts at program and customer meetings.  The candidate will be required to apply engineering principles to assess design compliance of a complex aerospace system, and synthesize rationale and justification for Range Safety waiver requests and hardware non-compliances.  The candidate will be expected to independently identify technical issues, propose solution options, and follow through to resolve the issues with minor supervision. Some travel will be required to provide System safety support for meetings, integration and test activities at various range sites, and possibly launch operations.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Range safety or system safety experience required.
  • Flight test experience and flight safety qualification test experience strongly desired.
  • Experience with tactical missile systems preferred or similar DoD flight tested articles
  • Experience with DOORS®, or similar requirements database software a plus.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office.
    • Strong interpersonal skills and an ability to build effective working relationships are a must.
    • Excellent oral and written communication skills, technical writing experience, and an ability to perform oral presentations in front of large groups.
    • Ability to communicate findings to customers and management.
    • Self-starter capable of performing assigned tasks with very little or no direction.
    • Active DOD Secret level clearance desired. 
    • Must be US Citizen capable of attaining DOD Secret level clearance


Required Education/Experience:

Candidate should have a System Safety, Aerospace Engineering, EE, ME or related degree.  At least 7 years of related experience required.  The candidate should also have some experience with complex aerospace flight systems.  The candidate must be capable of evaluating technical system-level safety requirements from the customer and ranges, and developing corresponding Range/System Safety documentation from those requirements.
