Orbital ATK is currently seeking an experienced Senior Principal Mechanical Engineer to join our Design Engineering team in our Kennedy Space Center, FL offices.

Role description & Responsibilities:

  • The Sr. Principal Mechanical Engineer is responsible for the design and processing of aerospace structures and hardware to contract requirements. His major responsibilities include (though not exclusively):
  • Coordinate major design efforts based on knowledge and experience
  • Design Booster hardware elements using processing knowledge and solid modelling software.
  • Develop engineering documentation products (drawings, specifications, design and analysis reports, test plans, test reports, etc.)
  • Oversee and plan testing for development and qualification of flight hardware products.
  • Support team to include task and schedule planning to meet major project milestone objectives

Job Duties:    

  • Design Booster hardware elements using Orbital ATK computer codes. 
  • Design associated components and structures to achieve lowest cost from design.
  • Create engineering drawings and specifications to define design for hardware fabrication, write test plans, support fabrication efforts, oversee testing, analyze test data and make revisions to design based on results.
  • Learn and help maintain standard design processes.

Experience Requirements:  

  • Candidate must have a minimum of 10 years of engineering design and analysis of aerospace structures experience with a BS in Mechanical, Aerospace, Civil (Structural) Engineering or equivalent.  BS degree with 10 years’ experience or MS degree with 7 years’ experience is required.
  • Proficiency with Siemens NX solid modelling software—preferred.
  • Strong skills in solid modelling software with the ability to quickly learn new software.
  • Ability to work in a fast paced dynamic environment as part of a multi-discipline team
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills working in a team environment.

Experience Preferred

  • Experience with Material Review Board and resolving discrepant hardware--preferred
  • Previous experience with Space Shuttle hardware or similar—preferred

Skills & Qualifications:

  • Broad understanding and knowledge of aerospace hardware design and manufacturing proceses
  • Knowledge of design and analysis of flight structures


  • BS/MS degree in Mechanical, Civil or Aerospace Engineering required
    B.S. degree with 10 years of experience, or MS with 7 years of experience, or PhD with 7 years of experience

Position may be filled at a lower level (Principal Mechanical Engineer)

  • BS/MS degree in Mechanical, Civil or Aerospace Engineering required
         MS degree with 5 years of experience, or BS degree with 7 years of experience, or PhD with 2 years of experience
