Orbital ATK is currently seeking a System Safety Engineer to support system safety activities associated with qualification, production, test, and flight readiness of Solid Rocket Boosters used in NASA’s Space Launch System Program.  This position is located at our Promontory, Utah offices.

Role Description & Responsibilities:

The System Safety Engineer is directly responsible for identifying risks and potential resolutions associated with various Solid Rocket Booster subsystems for the Space Launch System (SLS) Program.  They provide our NASA customer with vital vehicle risk data derived from such activities as Hazard Analyses, Failure Modes and Effects Analysis, and Probabilistic Risk Assessments.   In addition, they may provide System Safety support for non-SLS programs as needed. 

The System Safety Engineer provides system safety expertise in support of the subsystem Integrated Product Teams (IPTs).  They are expected to understand the design intent, failure modes, requirements and specifications of the product as well as the manufacturing processes, process controls, and quality inspections.  They directly support and interface with our NASA customer.

  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work well in team environments
  • Proven technical aptitude and ability to problem solve complex technical issues
  • Excellent communication skills (both written and verbal)
  • Applied experience with the following:
    • Failure Modes & Effects Analysis
    • Hazards Analysis
    • Probabilistic Risk Assessment
    • Fault Tree Analysis
    • Risk Management

  • BS degree in a Classical Engineering field with up to 10 years working experience
  • MS degree in a Classical Engineering field with up to 7 years working experience
