Orbital ATK is currently seeking an experienced Principal Mechanical Engineer to provide expertise and support to our Loads and Dynamic Environments team in our Promontory, UT offices.

Role description & Responsibilities:

The Principal Mechanical Engineer will work on the generation of loads and environments (shock, vibration and acoustics) for use by system/component designers and analysts, will also be responsible to develop dynamic structural models for system/component assessment and provide analysis and requirements for shock, vibration and acoustic testing of components.

Job Duties: 

  • Analyze sub-scale, static-test and flight data to assess loads and environments and verify dynamic models
  • Prepare reports and memos documenting analysis activities and results
  • Prepare presentations summarizing analysis results for internal review boards and external customers
  • Interact with design and development teams (teams include specialists in Design, Quality, Safety, Thermal, Fluid, Materials, Test, Operations) to certify creative design solutions that meet all requirements (technical, cost, schedule)
  • Development of propulsion element structural loads  
  • Development of propulsion element dynamic environments (shock, random vibe, sine vibe, acoustic)
  • Support testing efforts of functional components to dynamic environments
  • Provide analysis of data to ensure qualification of hardware

Experience Requirements:

  • An MS or PhD in Structural, Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering preferred with an emphasis in at least one of the following areas: loads analysis, dynamics (shock, vibration and/or acoustics) analysis, structural modeling, and time-series data analysis techniques
  • 3-5 years of experience generating structural loads and/or structural dynamics environments with some of the following experiences: derivation of structural loads, creating      coupled loads models, creating dynamic FEA models, modeling structural dynamics (shock, vibration and acoustics), testing on vibration table testing, performing modal surveys, and analyzing acceleration data  (time-series analyses)
  • Ability to travel:  Travel expectation of 0% – 10%
  • Project Engineering skills are a plus.Integration engineering skills (i.e. ability to integrate ground system designs with flight hardware needs)
  • Abilities to present and articulate complex designs to both internal and external customers
  • Demonstrated experience in leading engineering teams
  • Knowledge of Test design and execution
  • Work experience in a government contracting environment

Experience Preferred

  • Experience working to conclusion design drawings and specifications
  • Experience/knowledge working design verification and verification reporting
  • Experience with integrated systems setup, testing and issue resolution

Skills & Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of coupled loads development (vehicle requirements and design cycles)
  • Computer skills would require MATLAB, NX, and NASTRAN
  • Strong skills in data processing
  • Skills in Finite Element Modeling
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills
  • Detail oriented but able to understand the big picture


  • BS degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering with 7 years  experience, MS with 5 years of experience, or PhD with 2 years of experience.
         (PhD or MS degree preferred)

Position may be filled at a lower level (Sr. Mechanical Engineer)

  • MS degree with 2 years experience, BS degree with 4 years experience (MS degree preferred)
